Two incidents concerning Russian aircrafts have occurred in the Baltic Sea during the second week of April 2016. A Russian Su-24 closely surveyed the guided missile destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, (DDG 75) as the ship was operating in international waters on April 12, 2016.

Defence officials declared that two Russian attack planes flew treacherously close to the U.S. Navy destroyer in the Baltic Sea. The crew of the destroyer immediately radioed the two Russian Su-24 attack planes, but even though they seemed unarmed, they did not respond. The Russians buzzed the destroyer several times and even hovered in a helicopter taking pictures. The US will protest to the Russian Government.

There has been an increase in Russian submarine activity in the region over the past months and the US has increased surveillance. This sub-hunting activity may be the cause of the aggression. These incidents could signal a rise in tensions as the Western alliance prepares for extensive exercises in Poland to boost its troops in Eastern Europe.

The U.S. criticized the Russian military upsurge in Kaliningrad and officials said the missile systems that Russia is adding into the area are a risk to regional stability. Similarly, Russian officials have also criticized the U.S. and NATO plans to put more forces into Baltic States and Poland.

General Pyotr Deinekin, a former commander-in-chief of the Russian air forces, ruled out any aggressiveness. He saidSince it was carrying out a flight in international airspace, our pilot had the same international right as an American. And by the way, the “barrel roll” manoeuvre performed by our pilot near the RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft is a greeting to our partners in the fight against international terrorism.”
