Four Democrats Launch Impeachment Articles Against Trump

Alleging that President Donald Trump has engaged in impeachable offenses, four house democrats introduced five articles of impeachment against him last Wednesday.

Rep. Steve Cohen, who led the push, was joined by Reps. Al Green, D-Texas, Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill, and Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., stated at a press conference in the Capitol that there is enough evidence to impeach the president.

"There are already sufficient facts in the public record to warrant the start of impeachment proceedings in Congress," Cohen said. "There's no reason for delay."

Besides other accusations, the five articles accused President Trump of obstructing the FBI investigations of the Russian meddling in the 2016 election.  With this action, the representatives consider that the president undermined the independence of the federal judiciary.

"We have taken this action because of great concerns for the country and our constitution and our national security and our democracy," said Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen.

The articles also point out obstruction of justice stems from Trump's firing the FBI Director James Comey, which was seen as a way for the president to delay and impede an investigation.

He is also being accused of accepting, without the consent of Congress, emoluments from foreign states and from the U.S. Government.  Cohen also brought up Trump's failure to properly condemn the events taking place on the white supremacy raid in Charlottesville, VA early in August.

"President Trump has failed the presidential test of moral leadership," Cohen said back then. "No moral president would ever shy away from outright condemning hate, intolerance, and bigotry."

Given that Republicans carry a majority of more than 30 seats, the impeachment articles are very unlikely to be acted upon. Even the Democrats themselves largely oppose the effort as they fear that this will only rile the GOP base that strongly supports the president.

In the past, individual propositions for impeachment have been issued against the president by some Democrats.  But this is the first group effort for impeachment.
